REVIEW: Üç Kuruş ( THE BAD PENNY)
Üç Kuruş ( THE BAD PENNY)
Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Crime fiction
This Turkish series features 28 episodes about a tight-knit gypsy community in Istanbul, a serial killer, and a straight-laced police officer seeking to bring down the gang. The series skips three years in time in episode 18, giving episodes 18-28 a drastically different tone than episodes 1-17.
This Turkish series is a must-see because of the excellent performances and the intriguing addition of a serial killer.
The entire plot revolves around Kartal (Eagle), a two-bit crook who lives in a large family home amid Istanbul's tight-knit gypsy community. Kartal has many responsibilities...he has established himself as the community's leader, which comes with financial burdens. Kartal's household includes his father Oktay, who used to make a living playing his clarinet...but due to a tragedy in the past lost his arm and is now an alcoholic pensioner, his aunt Neriman, who has been nurturing and stepping in to be parent since Kartal's mother passed away and her brother checked out after losing his arm, his younger brother Sahin—who has been sent to college but truly wants to be like his older brother Kartal—and his charming and innocent cousin Halide. Kartal is plagued and motivated by his past...as well as his family and community.
Kartal's adversary is Efe, a young police officer who is determined to imprison Kartal and shut down all of his illicit businesses. Efe is fleeing his own personal demons in the form of his father, whom he regards as a dirty lawyer. While putting the heat on Kartal, Efe meets Layla, and boy do the flames fly! I kept going back for more of these two smouldering on the screen. I'd recommend this series just for the romance between these two! They're easy on the eyes and have chemistry for days! Efe loses his mentor and his mentor's wife, forcing him to make difficult decisions that will have major consequences for his position in the special crimes section.
Let's now discuss the serial killer... I've watched a lot of Turkish programmes, but this is the first time I've seen a serial killer, and it was handled brilliantly! The serial killer was highly motivated, left an obvious signature at their crime scenes, and served the amazing function of uniting two adversaries in order to apprehend them! This definitely boosted the series in my opinion.
This series has a wonderful finale, and I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys criminal dramas...but really, this series has it all: love, family, mental illness, abuse, gambling, smuggling, police, mobsters, musicians, interpersonal conflicts, and a serial murderer! If you appreciate Turkish dramas or if you are interested in Turkish culture, I believe you will enjoy this.
