FILM REVIEW: LITTLE WOMEN (2019)

LITTLE WOMEN (2019)

Directed by Greta Gerwig
Genre: Romance, Drama, Coming of sage story, Historical film.

The film is based on Louisa May Alcott's novel of the same name, and it tells the story of a group of sisters who grow up together and learn lessons about life, love, death, femininity, and the relationship that keeps them together through the years. Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) seeks success in her writing and wants to have her memoirs published. Most significantly, the picture stars Timothee Chalamet, a young charmer.

The performances are excellent all around. Most of the characters, particularly Ms. Pugh, have comedic qualities. Ronan is fantastic, as she always is, and the writing does not let the characters down. It's crisp and humorous, with just the appropriate amount of emotional weight. There are solemn moments in this film as the sisters deal with a near-death experience, and the actors and Gerwig's director manage the spectrum of emotions admirably.

The costume design, cinematography, and set design all have a very authentic feel to them. It's a period piece that feels authentic to the time period. I'm not sure how closely the film follows the book, but based on the excellent reviews, there shouldn't be too many major variations. Furthermore, you can see why this was a holiday release because the picture handles its wintry components nicely.

The way this film looks and feels, you'd assume Greta Gerwig had been creating movies for years. It's hard to believe this is her second film and that she only started working behind the camera two years ago. It's a nice, beautifully constructed picture that keeps things lighthearted while dealing with many of life's trials and hardships. A fantastic way to end the year.
